About IPICS
Ice cores provide information about past climate and environmental conditions across timescales, now reaching back over a million years. As such, they are cornerstones of global change research and our understanding of Earth’s history. Since initial deep ice sheet drilling projects in the 1950s and 1960s, international collaboration and cooperation has been central to ice core science, and will remain essential to the future of this research. Developing this international collaboration is the charge of IPICS, the International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences, a planning group currently composed of ice core scientists and engineers from 23 nations. To facilitate international collaboration, IPICS holds open science conferences quadrennially since 2012, with the location moving between nations for each meeting. The North American ice core community is pleased to host the next IPICS open science conference, recognizing both the 75+ year history of North American ice core drilling and the ever more critical need for international partnerships. IPCIS 2026 will be held in Banff, Canada October 11-16, 2026.
